Listening Doesn’t Happen With the Ears

it was
one of my
favorite
songs.
and i was
so lost in
thought
that i completely
missed it.
what i mean
to say is
that the song
was on
high volume:
music
swirling
all around my
head, lyrics
tickling
some part of
my brain,
percussion
punching my
ribs,
and i never
heard a thing.

it’s
happened
to me before:
i’ll have
the music up
loud,
but
i’m off in
some fantasy-
land.
and all
that noise
still around me
i’ll stop and
think, hey
i should put on
some music.

i’ve often
said
i’m a simple
man
with a very
complex mind.
( but
. i don’t
. know what
. to make of these
. layers. )
