Courtesy Call (A Surprisingly Short-Titled Poem)

you call
to explain
why you did what you did there

look,
i’m sorry
it was a matter of self-respect

you can
hear him
nodding through the receiver

then he
sighs heavily
& tells you to grow thicker skin

and
good luck.
you hang up the phone. & shrug.

you
already
know just how thick your skin is

& you
know you
won’t be needing any of his damn

luck, either.
