January 13, Out-of-Town

the morning
dawns blue-
grey across
apartment-
complex roof-
tops as black
cat plays be-
hind wriggling
black drapes
scattering
dancing films
of light into
the dark and
silent room
and sleeping
eyes (not
mine) mine
register the
changes as
i lay back as
i write as i
contemplate
decisions
made on other
mornings just
like this one
and think
how i would
never take
even one of
them back
except for the
pain, but even
that is like
the red brick
of the next
building over
standing
stubborn and
resilient and
tall against
the chilly
New York air.
