This Isn’t the First Time You’ve Been Called Names, So Why Does It Keep You Up At Night?

brewing your first
cup of coffee
before 4:30 a.m.
your mind is stuck on
the conversation
you had with a close friend’s
boyfriend.
he made an overtly
possessive comment about her, so
you told him to
remember
that she’s a human being, not
a shiny little toy,
not a piece of property.
he called you a
Nancy boy.
you don’t even know what
that’s supposed to
mean
but
you imagine him
sneering
but
what he calls you doesn’t matter.
it’s how he treats her, you
think to
yourself as you sip on
your
coffee from a styrofoam cup.
