The Best Way to Move Through An Overcast Sky Is By Taking One Small Step At a Time

my first Arizona morning
stumbles mediocre light through wide
windows, a sunrise wet and
grey, unlike i expected

somehow still a perfect
match to the heavy weight of this sadness
that piggy-backed harshly my
excitement, also un-

cold of this desert, this
being so far from home and the ones
i’ve grown to love, and this
dreadful uncertainty –
war –

begging begging begging
to know: do i have what it takes? well?
and i’m not so sure as i sit
on my bed, back up
against the

looking out the window
at the dripping plants and grey grey sky
trying to think about simple
things, like what to eat
for breakfast

how best to finish this poem.
