When They Offered You A Job on the Spot Again, You Took It

it was yesterday
driving east on the 101
then south
with the windows down
and music mixing
with the wind
that
you knew
for the first time
you were unafraid
i’m going to make it, you thought
as the 65 mph breeze
whipped your hair
to the right and
you smiled.
later
your brother called
from California
and said
he was so happy for you.
you said, i’m so happy for me, too
then told him how
you even fixed
a garage door
all by yourself and
you could hear him nodding.
after that, you
washed the dishes
folded your laundry
cleaned your room
vacuumed the house
prepared the coffee
set your alarm for 4:15 AM
then went to sleep.
now you’re
sipping coffee at 4:33 AM and
writing this poem before
work, nodding
proud:

you’re going to make it.
