There Were Things at the Park That Reminded Me of Other Things, You Know?

i remember saying:
look, that will never happen.
and then
i watched as it did
and now, so many
months and miles and mistakes
away from then someone
closes a door behind me
a child bounces a ball
somewhere
another flies a kite
and as the sun reflects sharply
off a car window, i think
how promises can’t be made
or kept, not really.
we hope, at best, squinting
cross-eyed blinking half-blind, and yet
here we are: a circus of delusion
everyone everyone
hunting for promises
begging for promises
assurance security, and
i’m one of them
guilty
on both counts
but becoming less so.
these things – these fragile ghosts
of intent – they live and die
in the space of
the same single breath.
i hear another door slam shut
a million miles away right behind me
and someone says, i’ll be right there.
i think: hey,
maybe they even will be.
