Barking At Fences For What Might Be On the Other Side

it’s been a whole day
of this on-and-off
pulsing gaping
something
off-kilter, un-assuaged
by beer
by exercise
by conversation.
nothing has helped
to call it what it is, not
even these words
written by the
silence.
dogs bark angrily in the
distant
night, incited
by phantoms or
maybe real intruders, and
i know just what
that’s like:
here
seated with the sirens at
the
edge of
my hearing
and the questions
always questioning and
another day like this
one, or maybe
different,
just
waiting on the other side.
